Futuh al-Ghayb (“Revelations of the Unseen”) opens with a first discourse of only a few lines, yet it sums up the whole path. Here it is in Urdu, then English, in our own words, with lessons from the second discourse.
English: the first discourse
In the first discourse, Shaykh Abd al-Qadir says three things are indispensable for a believer in every condition:
- Keeping Allah’s commands.
- Avoiding what is forbidden.
- Being content with the divine decree.
He calls this the least expected of a believer. His practical advice is to resolve on these three, remind yourself of them, and keep your limbs busy with them.
English: from the second discourse
The second discourse turns this into daily counsel. Follow the Sunnah and do not invent. Stay obedient and do not transgress. Hold to tawhid. Be patient and do not run away. Bring your needs to Allah and wait without irritation. Love one another and do not bear spite. Do not delay repentance. And do not tire of calling on your Lord at any hour of the day or night.
Turning it into a daily check
Before sleeping, ask yourself three questions taken from the first discourse:
- Did I do what Allah commanded today?
- Did I keep away from what He forbade?
- Did I accept what He decreed without complaint?
This short self-review pairs well with the repentance teaching in Qushayri on Tawba. Reading a classic for the first time? See How to Read Classical Sufi Texts, and for key words such as murid and shaykh, our Sufi terms guide.
